I think ads still help some, but nowadays, I'd rather spend cash/time on providing useful content/tools to the public and then letting the world "choose" to link to you... Every time I was done with my own graphics, there were always a little off, but it was as far as I could take them. Now I get great graphics done while I focus on things I am better at.
